Glass page, fingerprints
2020
In this performance, I present an unassuming glass page on the wall and gather participants around it. I then guide the group through a series of prompts that include the passing around of the glass page. Fingerprints, and other marks, take the place of text on the document and serve as a new language. This project is ongoing.
“…the smooth running of the ancient world was predicated on the exchange of letters…” - Keith Houston, A Cover to Cover Exploration of the Most Powerful Object of Our Time
“…the book throughout history as a constantly evolving tool for social change…“ - Alyssa Adams, A History of the Book: Disrupting Society from Tablet to Tablet
The untouched document before the performance.
With eyes closed, the participants listen to my guided meditation.
I prompted the group to respond non-verbally as a way to explore alternative methods of communicating. Here, one participant poured water onto the floor in what appears to be an attempt to mimic the shape of the glass in the puddle.
Another example of residue from the non-verbal responses.
One participant took a sheet of paper, dipped it in the water puddle, and then placed it on the wall next to the glass page. Another non-verbal response to the piece.
An example of a fingerprint left on the glass after the performance.
